Ten-Year Old Takes a Stand

Maybe you saw this. It aired back in November. I just learned of it because it won a GLAAD media award. This ten year old boy is so well spoken about why he won't stand to say the pledge of allegiance. And he's from Alabama. There is hope.

Yes! There is hope, indeed! Between this and the articulate young woman in Mississippi whose prom was canceled when she asked the school about bringing her girlfriend, I have been so heartened to see the support and clear communication about fairness coming from seemingly surprising places. I feel hopeful about these things because it's not from big cities or from the coasts - it's from the small places where most Americans live. And the fact that things are shifting there, that young people are standing up and speaking truth to power and being unafraid of reprisals - there is much to feel optimistic about. Kudos, too, to parents who don't stifle their kids' expression for a fear of potential response.

I love this boy! It's wonderful to see young people like him. I hope his schoolmates understand him eventually and this boy has a nice childhood.

Thanks for putting this video here.
