Street Interview Goes Sideways

First off, this video is NOT kid-friendly, but captures a hilariously insane event in Toronto (that, by the looks of it, was filmed years ago, but is still as priceless).

I'm working on a project right now where I have to "go to the streets" and ask people questions on camera.

I'm hoping this doesn't happen to me this weekend as I cruise Davie looking for people willing to go on camera. If it happens, I sure hope she's a hot femme and not... well, watch for yourself.

In Case You Missed It: Dipstick & Lipstick on the Air

Lipstick and I were recently on our favorite public radio station KBOO in Portland. We spent about ten minutes talking on the Out Loud show with host Carla. Lipstick was out of town, so had to phone in, while Carla kept distracting me by taking my photo with her phone while interviewing me. In case you missed the show, you can listen here.

Also, Dipstick was recently a guest on Sisters Talk Internet Radio. Dipstick hung out for about 45 minutes with the charming host Genia Stevens. We chatted about all kinds of things: politics, Obama, lesbian sex, diversity in the LGBT community, and my work on About.com.

Lipstick & Dipstick's Secret Club

We love our publicist Deborah Brosseau of Spinner PR. One of the things she's been able to do for us is to break into mainstream straight media. Here's the latest example of that. We did an interview with The Staten Island Advance. The straight press is so fun, because you never know what kind of things they're going to focus on.  In this interview, she was kind of freaked out by the "The Out of Town rule."  She rolled with it, though.

Columnists release their first book on relationship issues gay women specifically face

STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- When Gina Daggett shed her identity as a heterosexual to lead a homosexual lifestyle, there was a lot for her to learn about the lesbian community.

"It's like a secret club you have to break into," she said, noting it took her some time to do so.
"We do have a culture uniquely our own," agreed Kathy Belge. "From the inside jokes down to the cultural events we attend," it's a terrain "the outside world doesn't know about."

Their new book, "Lipstick & Dipstick's Essential Guide To Lesbian Relationships" (Alyson Books, 2007), offers a glimpse into this world. Intended to help gay women navigate the relationship issues that often crop up, from first date to lifelong commitment, the book grew out of the women's punchy "Lipstick & Dipstick" column, which appears in Curve magazine...

"Sometimes it's harder to have successful [lesbian] relationships," Ms. Belge said, noting some roadblocks are unique to the gay community -- with a big one being, the marriage issue.

"That we can't get married does affect our relationships," she said, noting many lesbians -- and gay men -- do not feel motivated to stay together for the long haul when making the "'til death do us part" vow is not a legal option for them in most states.

"Since we can't get married, it gives us more freedom on how we can be in our relationships," Ms. Belge said, adding, "We make up our own rules."

One of those rules, as described in the book, is the "out-of-town rule" in which some couples agree they can hook up with other women when traveling separately. But, Ms. Belge stressed, this open approach is not for everyone.

Greetings from Whistler

Dipstick and I arrived on Sunday night here in Whistler and it's absolutely gorgeous! After watching the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl and drinking a couple "sleeves" of beer, we headed to the Winter Pride Welcome Party reception, where we hung out with old-chum-daredevil Missy Giove, who's here to lead brave women on skiing adventures. Lipstick wrote a cover feature on Missy years ago for Girlfriends magazine (see photo).

The next morning, Dip and I got up early and hit the road again. We rented a dyke mobile and headed down to Vancouver (2.5 hours) for a TV interview at Shaw TV. The show was called Urban Rush and we spent the early afternoon at their studios. We don't yet have a copy of the interview, but we were able to video it in our hotel room later that afternoon when it first aired. The quality is crappy, but you get the idea. The hosts--Micheal Eckford and Fiona Forbes--were fun and fabulous (see photo). The video is at the bottom of this blog.

Later that night, after we cruised Robson and Davies Street, we headed to Little Sisters Bookstore where we did a reading. About 15 dykes showed up. (thanks ladies!!). Sarah and Barb were brave enough to volunteer (well, Barb didn't volunteer, she was recruited) for our Lesbian IQ Quiz and they both did pretty well. After the reading, we had drinks with Mette Bach, a fellow columnist who we used to write side-by-side with when our column was nationally syndicated. She was charming and delightful as we ate peanuts and drank Canadian beer.

We just arrived back at Whistler and I'm headed to the slopes right now! Thank you Winter Pride for inviting us out to Whistler! We love it here.

Cheers,
Lip & Dip
