Refuse to Pay Your Taxes

The revolution starts now! For years I've been saying gays and lesbians should refuse to pay taxes until we are treated as full and equal citizens of this country. Well, yesterday, Melissa Etheridge announced that she is going to do just that.
I've always been a Melissa fan, but now I'm a Melissa follower. Here's what she said:
Okay. So Prop 8 passed. Alright, I get it. 51% of you think that I am a second class citizen. Alright then. So my wife, uh I mean, roommate? Girlfriend? Special lady friend? You are gonna have to help me here because I am not sure what to call her now. Anyways, she and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen. Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books.
You're right Melissa. And I also thought that civil rights were never to be put up for a popular vote.
For years War Resisters have refused to pay taxes to fund wars that they believe are unconscionable. I and fully support them. But I also believe refusing same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples is unconscionable. I'm seriously considering it. Anyone care to join me?

How Do You Spell "Landslide?"

This is the text Dipstick just sent me and it's a good question. Here is how you spell it: Barack Obama is the new President Elect!
Dipstick and I are beside ourselves tonight. We're both in Portland--one of the states that helped Obama cinch the election btw--and we're both freaking out! So frickin' excited!!!!!!!!!!
For me, I'll tell you that people have been yelling in downtown Portland, where I live, (aka Little Beirut) for hours about how Obama is going to win. Downtowns just sort of bode well with unexpected shouts on any given night, but tonight, everyone is feeling it. The energy is palpable. That's why as soon as MSNBC declared Obama President Elect, I hit "play" on iTunes to play Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" as loud as my speakers would play through my deck doors. I got some shout outs and no doubt more smiles than I can count, but the overriding feeling in downtown Portland tonight is "Hallelujiah!" I didn't realize I'd been holding my breath for eight years. It feels so good to let out my breath.
Tonight, I am gratitude.
Thank you America!
Here's to the future!

Political Humor at its Finest
The clips from their speeches at the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Dinner (a tradition for presidential candidates to attend) are below. I have to say, McCain is a pretty funny guy. He might have one this one. If their presidential debates had been on The Daily Show, we might have been in trouble!

Obama VS Palin/McCain
So, a month or so ago, I confessed that I was raised as a Republican and that--being the strong-headed woman I am--it only made sense that I was President of the Teenage Republicans in high school. [I cringed as I wrote that, I swear.] It was before I'd taken a hard look at the issues and before I had any sense of self, so I was really just another sheep. That all said, I got a free trip to Washington DC with my best friend Mel (see rap sheet to find out how being a Republican worked out for her, but then again, I'm on the same rap sheet, so being a liberal now hasn't faired me well either). Since we were from Arizona (I grew up in Scottsdale), we got to do a meet and greet with a much-younger, cancer-free Senator John McCain. For hours last night, I tore my condo apart looking for the picture I know I have (somewhere!!!) of he and I together, but couldn't find it. I posted this one of he and Melanie, since I was the Republican who took it. Good enough?
Thanks Goddess sake I've since wised up. And besdies, politics--and what each party represents--has really changed since I roamed my high school halls.
Anyhoo, I say all this because I haven't been able to tear myself away from CNN and MSNBC since 3pm this afternoon. It's too fascinating and I'm all caught up in Republican nostalgia because this week (especially tonight) Americans are watching the ticket of McCain/Palin (soon to be McCain/Romney my brother and I predict) implode. Seriously, McCain's move to cancel Letterman and try and bail on the debate and then, once in DC, fuck it all up? And I can hardly even write about Palin's interview with Katie Couric. It was like driving by a horrible car accident. I'll let you be the judge; her soundbites about Russia are below.
In honor of Republican Implosion Day, I give you the below counterpoint (below Youtube). Read it, digest it and think hard about who you're voting for on November 3rd, which just so happens to be one day before Melanie's birthday. Happy early birthday Meline!
Point counter point for Barack Obama and Palin/McCain:

* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

Remind Me Never to Go to Iowa
You know who he is. He's the candidate that GQ had this to say about, "Unlike most of the GOP field, he isn’t just trying to woo the religious right. He is the religious right." And not right in a good way. Right in the way that comes out with statement like these: "I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk."
So I guess we don't need to ask his stance on gay marriage do we? And it's not just the gays. It's women too. He signed his name to a full page ad in USA today in 1998 that stated his belief that a wife should graciously submit to her husband. His wife signed it too. He probably made her.
No, Iowa, don't take it personally. What I'm really trying to say here is that I'm fucking scared someone like him could actually get his party's nomination. And even more scared that the Republicans will steal another election from us. Personally, I'm getting my riot gear ready. Because if it happens again, I'm not going to just sit in front of the TV in shock this time. I'm taking to the streets. Who's with me?

I hate the Right Wing
Today should have been the day that we headed down to our county courthouses, paid $50 and gained some of the rights married couples take for granted. But no. See, after our elected officials did what we sent them to office to do--passed these two great laws--some religious, right wing, wide-stance bathroom stall cock suckers thought they could collect enough signatures to put the issues on the ballot. That's the way the law works here in Oregon. If you don't like something, just collect a bunch of signatures and put it up for popular vote.
Well, guess what? The vote collectors fell short. Many signatures were invalidated for various reasons. We were told we were going to have our domestic partnerships on January 2, 2008. All looked good. Or so we thought.
But in December, lawyers for an out-of-state group, Arizona’s Alliance Defense Fund, filed suit to challenge the decision about the number of valid signatures. They got a hearing with a Bush-appointed judge and he made the decision to put a hold on any domestic partnerships until the case can be heard.
“Basically, we have an out-of-state group that doesn’t like the outcome of a fair and well established process in Oregon - and so it wants a special exception to be made for its failed campaign,” said Basic Rights Oregon Executive Director Jeana Frazzini.
So now we're in limbo. Or back where we started, I guess. It pisses me off. And going to some candle light vigil is not going to make me feel better. But if it will help you, Basic Rights Oregon has a few organized around the state. Visit Basic Rights for a list of vigils.

My New Year's Resolution

I've never been a big believer in New Years Resolutions. I'm a goal setter and dream manifester, but that is a daily ritual fully-embedded in my life, not a list I whip up on January 1st.
But this year is different. This year I've made one resolution and I'm going to stand firmly by it. It's simple: To make sure this man to the right, Mike Huckabee, or anyone like him, is NOT elected as our next President. He's an even more alarming choice than George W (dare I say) and he could do even more damage to the fabric of our basic rights as Americans...especially to the homos. And guess what, people, he's in the lead in Iowa. See what he's got to say about homosexuals (is there a separation of church and state?) and about criminalizing abortions in this video clip.
Now, I've never really been a political person. Sure, I give money each year to various causes, and Texas and I asked for donations to HRC in lieu of presents for our wedding, but I'm not really a soldier. It's just not in my genes. Dipstick, on the other hand, is a soldier. Growing up, she was spoon fed activism by her parents and has lived her life according. I respect this tremendously about her. For me, however, this next election is different because I know fully realize what's at stake. As Americans, it's our happiness; it's our quality of life. And in the end, it's our future.
If you've already made your New Years Resolutions, throw out your weight loss goals, or your resolutions to do yoga more often, and join the cause! And let's do everything we can to make sure someone like Mike Huckabee doesn't take the reigns after Bush leaves office. No matter who wins the nomination -- whether it's Hillary, or Obama or Kuccinich (I wish!) -- get behind them and fight the good fight.

Help Save OWL Farm
This is an Owl Farm update, 147 acres of women's land in western Oregon, stewarded for the last 30 years by Oregon Women's Land Trust. The farm is beautiful and peaceful this winter. The OWLT board of directors quarterly meeting last weekend spent time on how to protect Owl Farm from the threat of eminent domain due to a proposed natural gas pipeline.Pipeline update:
As you all recall, an energy company has stated their intentions of burying a 3-foot diameter pipeline through Owl Farm. They would need to clearcut a 100' to 150' wide corridor, 1/2 mile through our forest to make room for the equipment and roads needed to install the pipeline (about a 7 acre clearcut). The proposed route would travel down the ridge west of the main house, and then straight down the steep hill above the Coop, through the parking lot and over the creek.
We are in shock and denial that this could ever happen to us. We are still one or two years away from having our land condemned, and many things can happen in that time to stop it. But then again, the energy company has already spent millions to make this happen, and the more money they spend, the harder it is to stop.
Many women on this list wrote letters to the federal government earlier this year when we asked. Thank you. It made an impact. The government noted the large amount of letters concerning "Owl Ranch". In 2008, when the government issues an Environmental Impact Statement for public comments, we will again ask you to write to the government. In the meantime, we need a different kind of letter from any women who has ever visited Owl - more on that later.
First, some more information on potential environmental and social effects to one of the oldest women's lands in the country, as well as effects to our world...
The purpose of the pipeline is to transport natural gas from Coos Bay, at the Pacific Ocean, 230 miles to California. The gas actually originates on the other side of the world, in countries like Russia or Iran. There it is super cooled so it can be compressed (liquefied, aka Liquefied Natural Gas, or LNG), and put on huge tankers to be brought across the ocean to Coos Bay. Near the coast, these LNG takers, the size of several football fields, will have to cross a busy grey whale migration route.
In Coos Bay the energy companies plan to dredge and widen the bay, and build a terminal to push the gas 230 miles through the new pipeline, eventually going through Owl Farm, and on to the California market.
Nobody is happy about this - not our right-wing county commissioners (it hurts private property rights), the managers of the National Forests (it hurts endangered species like the spotted owl and coho salmon), the citizens of Coos Bay (one mistake and their town blows up), or the people on the pipeline route, like us.
In a recent women's news story, it was reported that our county commissioners opposed the pipeline, and we soon started receiving congratulations from some of you on our victory. Sorry for the misunderstanding, but we didn't win anything. The Bush administration's 2005 energy bill took local control away from deciding where to site energy projects. Now, only the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) can decide our fate. The energy company filed with FERC on September 4 for a "certificate of public necessity and need", asking for permission to take other's private land by eminent domain, if necessary for their gas project.
Looking through the thousands of documents that were filed, we discovered some amazing plans the energy company has for Owl Farm. For instance, they had originally told us they would need to clearcut a 100-foot wide route, 1/2 mile route through Owl Farm's forests. But the plans they filed with FERC show they want to clearcut 150' wide in many places, and some places, 200' wide. It needs to be wider because the slope is so steep down the hill toward the Coop, and, they need plenty of extra space to park their earth-destroying equipment, right in front of the Coop.
The Coop (known to FERC as the "guest house") is the real main house we use, and about 100' away from proposed pipeline route. The Coop is one of only seven houses on the 230-mile pipeline route that could be affected by blasting. Apparently, Owl Farm has high-surface rock, so the energy company thinks they will have to blast open the ridgetop and the slope down to the Coop, in order to burry the pipeline. They promised FERC they would put padded blankets on the side of the Coop to protect it from flying rock and other blasting impacts. The blasting map we discovered actually has a bulls-eye circle drawn around the Coop.
We called the energy company and asked if they would also have to blast through the wetlands next to the Coop. They assured us that if they degrade our wetlands, they would enhance other wetlands -- on someone else's property. But it's not "someone else's property" they reminded me - it will all belong to them anyway.
We noticed that the general route of the proposed pipeline stays on the ridgetop for many miles, EXCEPT, it takes a U-turn to come through Owl Farm. We asked the energy company why they didn't just stay on the ridgetop. The answer is that on the BLM land next to Owl Farm (an old growth forest) has a spotted owl's nest, and the energy company cannot violate the Endangered Species Act, so they swung it through Owl Farm instead.
Another impact of this pipeline on Owl Farm is not only our loss of a beautiful view, but also our loss of privacy. The energy company would fly planes over their right-of-way often, send out maintenance men without warning, and herbicide spray the corridor to keep anything from growing into the pipeline. After all, the gas will not be odorized, so if there were a leak, we wouldn't know until it's too late. They can also sell the right-of-way so other people could start coming through for different reasons in the future.
Perhaps the worst impact to all of us is that Liquefied Natural Gas contributes to global climate change. It has a carbon footprint almost as dirty as some forms of coal. Unlike domestic natural gas (one of America's most abundant energy sources, with pipelines across the nation already in place), Liquefied Natural Gas is dirtier because of minute leakages of methane that is cumulatively significant, and the added energy cost to liquefy, ship, regasify, and pipe it to California. While it will make the energy companies rich, it will retard our conversion to renewable energy sources like solar, wind and wave power.HOW YOU CAN HELP
Women of the World - We need your help, to save Owl Farm and to save humankind. We need three things: women, letters and financial assistance.
Women: Come to Owl Farm. The more women-energy we have on the land, the more we can displace the energy of those who wish to destroy it. There are some indoor places to sleep, lots of tent spaces, and a few car-camping spaces. Call first so we can tell you about the farm and what to bring. We are sponsoring an Owl-Farm hike in early May, so come before then to help plant the garden. The hike will focus on protecting the native ecology of Pacific Northwest forests and meadows. Other projects to plug into are organizing against the LNG terminal and pipeline, protecting old growth forests (there is one in danger bordering Owl Farm), or organizing the "greening of women's lands" project. We are looking for women who can write grants to help fund this last project.
Letters: If Oregon Women's Land Trust has to go to court to defend Owl Farm, we need testimony of how Owl Farm has benefited women over the years. If you have ever been to Owl Farm, consider sending us a letter telling us of your experience. Feel free to mention anything you remember about the land as beautiful, private, safe, restful, healing, beneficial, spiritual, uplifting, etc.
Financial: In order to organize against the LNG pipeline, for renewable energy, for our mission and for protecting the natural wonders at Owl Farm, we would love to have your financial assistance.
Our address is OWLT, P.O. Box 1692, Roseburg, OR 97470. Email us at lovesowlfarm at hotmail.com. Ask to be put on our mailing list to receive our quarterly newsletters.
Thank you to everyone for all your help, including your magic, to hold Owl Farm and all our lands safe for future women of the world.

Ashleigh for President!

How about Ashleigh Flynn for President?
I still think Hillary would love some girl-on-girl, but how can she let herself go there? She's going to be the next President for christsakes. She may not currently be engaging in cunnilingus, but I'm confident she'd love a little taco for lunch if it was on the menu of things she was allowed to eat.
Which reminds me, did you see her on Meet the Press yesterday? I TIVOed it and watched it last night. Damn that woman is eloquent and smart. She is ALWAYS on her game. I wondered if she ever lets it all hang out. I'd like to see her drunk at Super Bowl party with money riding on the game. Do you think she ever drops the F-bomb?
Who knows if Hillary is really a lezbot, but I know plenty of homos who would vote against gay marriage - especially if they don't realize they're gay or are deeply ashamed by their sexual impulses. Look at Senator Craig. Look at Mark Foley. Look at Ted Haggard. The list goes on and on. And those are only the ones who've gotten caught with their pants down.
I have a very strong opinion regarding the root of all this newsworthy drama. Those who are most vehement toward the gay community, those who would vote for anything anti-gay have MAJOR unresolved issues surrounding their own sexuality. They're usually the BIGGEST closet cases themselves. Sexuality is not to be feared...unless you've got something deep and buried inside yourself.
Happy Monday,
Lipstick
